The
White Horse - pub of the month
|
This month we ventured into the picturesque town of Llandeilo
for our crawl.
We
began at the Angel Inn,
at the bottom of the hill leading up to the town centre. The
place looks quite posh from the outside but inside it's more
of a working man's club. When the locals spotted us their conversations
went dead. They sat there staring at us in silence. Feeling
like lepers we didn't even drink our pints before leaving -
it was really that bad.
Next,
going up the hill and taking a detour to the right, we came
upon The Salutation. This
was an altogether more welcoming place, with a smart barmaid,
and a log fire in one of the two bars. The mixed crowd of locals
were drinking Tomas Watkins, Canons Choice and Budva on pull
- a rarity in Wales. We sampled a couple of pints of the latter
and made our way back towards the town centre, reaching The
Castle Hotel.
This
place had a much younger, studenty crowd, and some smart birds
to boot, including the barstaff. The place was the most modern
and spacious so far, with a cafe-style bar, lounge area and
an extensive restaurant at the back. Tomas Watkins was again
to the fore, though we plumped for the lovely Merlin Champion
Stout.
Across
the High Street lies Capel Bach.
According to the friendly landlord it's more of a wine bar than
a pub, though they do serve several real ales from behind the
wooden bar. The place has an older crowd but there was a good
atmosphere none the less, and they occasionally have live music
too. The restaurant at the back didn't look bad either, with
crocodile tails and ostrich on the menu.
Last up, further down the street on the left, is our final destination,
The White Horse.
You'll find the place by way of Llandeilo's famous hot dog stall
and a courtyard. This Tudor-style free-house is hardly the largest
bar around but it does have some excellent drinks on offer:
Yeoman, Bombadier, Woods Special and Henry's I.P.A.
The
locals were really friendly too - especially the very sexy landlady,
Debbie, who even offered to put us up for the night (in the
attached B+B, unfortunately). We also got chatting to Simon
Buckley too, inventor of the aforementioned Tomas Watkins, he
told us he's working on a secret brew that'll soon be taking
Wales by storm.
So, for it's sheer friendliness, the White Horse is our pub
of the month, just piping Capel Bach for the title.
