In
the 19th Century, Merthyr was the world leader in iron production
and Wales' chief town. Iron Master Richard Crawshey constructed
the castle at Cyfarthfa in 1825, in a splendid lake and
parkside setting. The museum therein, houses an informative
historical, industrial and sociological display.
Try the Ynysfach Engine House Heritage Museum, located
in a restored ironworks building, that entertainingly chronicles
the town's glorious 'iron past' in sight and sound. The 19th
Century home of famous Welsh composer Joseph Parry has
also been authentically restored, and there is a monument to
the first steam journey of Richard Trevethick.
In Pant, try the scenic Brecon Mountain Railway, with
fine views over the Pontsticill reservoir and Brecon Beacons.
The town also possesses two challenging golf courses, scenic
cycling along the Taff Trail and rewarding walks along The Cefn
Nature Trail.
