The
wrong kind of waste
By
Richard Davies 16/07/02
If you spot two luminous objects off the
west coast of Wales in September, don't
be alarmed - it's only two armed vessels
carrying nuclear waste back to Sellafield.
The
ships are on a return journey from Japan,
after being refused entry there for safety
reasons. Greenpeace fear that some of the
steel plates may be corroded on the vessels.
So
just don't go swimming and start praying
that al-Qaeda are without a Celtic branch
Wales
left fuming
You'd
be forgiven for thinking Talk Wales has
been hijacked by Greenpeace, but we just
have to mention another environmental issue
that's been making the headlines this week:
The health risks posed by landfill sites.
US
experts are being flown over to investigate
the noxious gases from one such site in
the Rhondda. Is it a coincidence that some
forms of cancer are ten times higher than
the norm in the area? We think not.
Adding insult to injury, two new schools
are to be built on landfill sites in Newport
and Llandudno. Parents are up in arms, but
the decision seems set in stone. The Government
obviously don't give a damn.
What next? A nuclear power station to replace
Ebbw Vale steelworks?
It certainly wouldn't surprise us.
Sober
in Finland
With
such grim news, no wonder so many us us
are looking for a nice break abroad. We're
talking about the record number of Welsh
football fans who'll be travelling to Finland,
ofcourse. Around
2,000 tickets have already been snapped
up for the Euro qualifying match between
the two countries, and it's not even played
until September.
As
a Finnish pint will set you back a small
fortune, someone's obviously done a great
marketing job at the FAW. Selling a booze-free
holiday to a nation of boozers is some task,
fair play.
Howley
buzzes off to Wasps
Finally, what about Rob Howley's decision
to join London Wasps for the next three
years. The 31-year seems absolutely raring
to go: He told told reporters this week,
"I'm here to win medals, to win the premiership
and show Wasps the commitment they have
shown me".
Shame,
then, that he couldn't find any renewed
enthusiasm for Wales. We know it's only
his country, but still.
Wasps
coach, Shaun Edwards, believes Howley can
set a great example to his young players,
especially England scrum-half Martin Wood
- what terrific news.
