Welsh Whine
By Richard Davies 13/08/02

Big business, in the form of the National Express, has been wining and dining the Labour Party to snatch the lucrative All Wales Rail Contract. Predictably, the country's been up in arms over the extravagant Hilton Bash. What's all the fuss about? Haven't we all bought someone a pint for a favour?

And how naïve of Welsh folk to assume Government contracts are awarded on merit. The world of business is dog eat dog. In this context, such ventures should be cheered, not jeered.

'Something for nothing culture' terminated

Meanwhile, the Government is planning to phase out unprofitable rail links, such as those in Mid Wales. Instead, resources will be ploughed into the major towns and cities - particularly those in South East England. And about time too: Progressive nations must obey the laws of demand and supply - as good old Thatch told us.

English National Party target Wales

There's been more controversy this week, as the newly formed English National Party unveiled plans to capture Monmouth from Wales. We say, "let them have it". The place is English anyway. Most of the people feel English, and if they don't they can always move further West. Oh, and there'll be fewer 'No Votes' in future Referendums.

Wales demands decent programmes

Something else that we could do without is HTV's Tin Gods. Why does the channel insist on badly copying BBC programmes? First there was the Ferret, a poor imitation of watchdog; now we have Tin Gods - a crap version of Reputations.

It tears into so-called Welsh icons, like Rhodri Morgan, with all the ferocity of a toothless fluffy bunny. Why can't we make some decent Welsh programmes, like Tiger Bay.

Record for Boys in Blue

Finally, congratulations to Cardiff City for topping the Banned Fans Table. The club has now banned 125 of it's own fans - a Football League Record.

The news has been well received, and rightly so. Quite simply, it shows Cardiff are taking football's toughest stance on hooliganism. Let's hope they can build on this success, doubling their tally to 250 banned fans next season.
