Official Euro 2004 song?
By John Morgan 08/03/03

A picture of a football to symbolize Euro 2004

This month we've received an exciting set of new lyrics for that old classic "those were the days my friend".

The lyricist, Terry Howard, is negotiating with Wales' very own Mary Hopkins to perform a new version for our Euro 2004 campaign. Click here for the music and sing along to the new lyrics below:

We are the proud land of the dragon
In '58 with Charles we raised a cheer.
Never gave up hope when times were barren,
In '93 we were so very near!

Chorus (the bit where they sing 'those were the days my friend'):

We're off to Portugal; We're off to Portugal.
Sing in the sun forever and a day.
Drinking loads of booze,
Forget those football blues.
For we are Wales, and sure to have our way!

Now ten years later we've topped the table.
Italians, Germans, Finns, lie in our wake.
Sparky's boys are ready, willing, able,
The European Championship's at stake!

Chorus (the bit where they sing 'those were the days my friend'):

We're off to Portugal; We're off to Portugal.
Sing in the sun forever and a day.
Drinking loads of booze,
Forget those football blues.
For we are Wales, and sure to have our way!

La La La La La La,
La La La La La La.
La La La La, La La La La La La.
Drinking loads of booze,
Forget those football blues.
For we are Wales, and sure to have our way!

How to tackle Saddam Hussein

The little known Pyramids of Iraq

On a more serious note, Talk Wales polled the people of Wales on how to tackle Saddam Hussein.

32% said that we should tackle him head-on - a move most likely to cause injury to both parties involved.

25% plumped for the more traditional side-on approach.

20% decided on the ankle-tap. Very effective if carried out correctly because it uses the minimum of force, but with a high risk of failure.

17% supported the view that we wouldn't be able to tackle him at all. Remember, Saddam is very elusive and may side-step any aggressive moves.

6% put their weight behind a head-high or spear-tackle - to bring the despot down once and for all. This was despite the fact that the move would breach international law.

We asked for Tony Bair's opinion on the results, but George Bush was unavailable for comment.

We don't want an early night, we want a fight!

Steve fom the Valleys (second name withheld)

More alarming news as the last bus from Cardiff to the Valleys is changed from 11.10.P.M. to 10.10pm.

This is nothing short of a disaster for travelling drinkers according to Steve (second name withheld) from Tredegar.

"How are we supposed to get tanked up enough to intimidate the driver and other passengers, let along smash up the bus, when we have to leave the pubs well before closing time", he said.

But the news is not all bad - Heineken are replacing their weak lager with a continental-style 5% version. This should mean that Steve and his ilk will be reaching the required alcohol levels much earlier. Thus making everyone happy!

Atomic moaners

An example of supporting dead causes

Anti-nuclear protesters, in the form of P.A.W.B. (People Against Wylfa B), have been on the warpath again.

Apparently, safety checks revealed steam is escaping from the plant. Predictably, protesters are now calling for its closure.

Haven't these people got anything better to do - anti-this and anti-that, is there nothing positive going on in their lives!

It's all very well championing alternative forms of energy such as wind farms, but these are nothing more than eyesores, ruining our environment.

Anyway, it's not as if we're still feeling the after-effects of Chernobyl, is it.

Welshmen incarcerated abroad

Criminal accommodation

Finally, Gwynedd Council and the Prison Service are in talks over the building of a new prison at Blaenau Ffestiniog. The project is becoming increasingly urgent as Mid and North Wales are without jails.

Welsh prisoners are usually housed in England - often hundreds of miles away. In our view this is totally unacceptable - they're treating Welsh prisoners like criminals.

Talk Wales were hoping for an insider's view on the life of a Welsh convict. However, we were unable to contact ex-footballing legend Mickey Thomas.
